Malaika Thornquist
Attorney and founder, Flatiron Law
I help people build things the rules haven’t quite caught up with: a dispensary, a software company, a commercial kitchen.
I started in a larger firm’s business group, where I learned how deals get papered, and left because I wanted to talk to the owner, not the owner’s assistant. Flatiron Law is a one-lawyer office on Pearl Street.
The name comes from the rock faces over town: big, plain, and visible from almost anywhere. That’s how I try to write, too. You’ll get the clause, what it means in a sentence, and what I’d change.
My clients are cannabis operators and founders in their first few years. Neither group has money to spare for surprises, so I spend my time on the ones that cost the most.

In practice
Three habits I keep
Plain words first
Every draft comes with a note in ordinary language on what changed and why it matters.
Fees before work
The engagement letter says what I’ll do and what it costs, with agency and filing fees listed separately.
Small on purpose
I take on only as many clients as I can answer in a day. If a job needs a specialist, I’ll say so and help you find one.
